Yellow Flower

Yellow makes me happy…

I often hear people say they don’t like yellow and I wonder to myself, why? Perhaps it is not seen by some as a sophisticated or mature colour, which is maybe, to some extent, true in my opinion as well.

But… yellow does makes me happy and inevitably brightens my mood which is why I often use this colour in my artwork.

In 2010 I created a series of studies focused on a stem of yellow flowers I had picked from a garden – and this is when my appreciation of yellow and love of drawing flowers began.

The beauty of petals and leaves is very striking to me – their delicacy, their beautiful and unique shapes, the patterns contained within them – the more I study, the more I see and so I hope my artwork captures these intricacies, so that I can share with you the way I see beauty in the botanic elements of the world around me.

This series culminated in the gouache painting Yellow Flower completed in 2010. The painting, below, was based on the pastel pencil sketch above.
